Accommodating Loved Ones with Disabilities During the Holidays

Accommodating for Loved Ones - PA Healthcare

For most people, the holidays are both joyful and at least a little bit stressful.  For those with disabilities, the normal holiday stress is often compounded by obstacles with transportation, accommodations, and sightseeing while traveling during the holidays. Additionally, poor customer service, misinformation, and higher prices for those with disabilities can also put a damper on the holiday spirit.

But it doesn’t have to be that way. Before you plan your special festivities, take a look at below at our top tips for accommodating loved ones with disabilities during the holidays.

Plan ahead

Book flights and hotels well in advance. It is almost always cheaper, and it will give you adequate time to make arrangements with staff on how to meet the needs of your disabled traveler. If you have a loved one with a disability coming to your home, make sure you know all the details of the disability so your home can be modified accordingly, and you can plan for accessible sightseeing.

Visit accessible sights

When deciding which sights to visit, always remember to factor in accessibility. Here in San Diego, many of our tourist attractions, including the zoo and Balboa Park, are wheelchair accessible. Many even provide mobility equipment for disabled travelers. But it’s important to call ahead and inquire about accessibility and available mobility equipment ahead of time. For more information on local attractions, read our San Diego accessibility guide.

Don’t leave anything to chance

Check and double check on any and all arrangements you have made. Call the airlines, hotels, and even relatives to make sure everything is in order for your trip. If you are accommodating a loved one with disabilities, make sure you’re clear about all medication and equipment they require and that you have photocopies all of important travel documents.

Consider renting mobility equipment

Traveling with a wheelchair can be burdensome. Sometimes it makes more sense to simply rent a wheelchair or other mobility equipment at your destination. At PA Healthcare in San Diego, we offer short-term or long-term rental options for manual wheelchairs, portable power chairs, and more.  We’ll even deliver to anywhere in San Diego and Imperial Counties!

Have fun

Focus on having fun with your loved one this holiday season. Visit sights, give gifts, and relish in the moments you will never get back. After all the planning and double-checking, you should be all set for a safe and enjoyable holiday season.

This year, give the gift of mobility!

At PA Healthcare, we offer wheelchairs, walkers, and other mobility equipment for purchase, too. The gift of a power scooter, rollator, hospital bed, or other mobility device will provide your loved one with confidence and independence that will last far beyond the holiday season.

For more information about any of our equipment options for rental or purchase, please give us a call at 619-568-2360.

Here’s to a happy, healthy holiday season for all!
